The story:
When Naupaka, a native princess, fell in love with Kau’i, a fisherman, they were forbidden to be a couple. Naupaka took a blossom from her ear and tore it in half, giving one to Kau’i while keeping the other. You’ll notice the Naupaka Kahakai growing Oceanside and Naupaka Kuahiwi growing in the mountains.
